Midwest 7s

Thanks to the squad that made the trip to represent the club at Midwest 7s last weekend and to JP for captaining the squad. Your efforts are appreciated guys.It was a hot day with some tough breaks. We still had a good time though. Shows pretty easily that while the competition has gotten better, we have become too lax in our preparation and conditioning. We kept losing a step as the day went on but gave each team hell and played competitive tough rugby.Already looking forward to amping it up...

At Chicago Griffins

Milwaukee Rugby club entered the second match of the CARFU Cup season ready to improve upon their play from a week before. A talented and fit Chicago Griffins side would take advantage of many of the mistakes that Milwaukee committed against the Maoris just one week prior. The conditions were favorable for Milwaukee's perennially speedy side - a 60 degree, sunny day on artificial sport turf would provide solid footing for Milwaukee's backs. However, it was the forward pack who dominated the match...

At Fox Valley Maoris

A stiff north-west wind greeted Milwaukee Rugby as they stepped onto the pitch in St Charles, IL. Winning the coin toss, captain Kevin Smyth elected to play into the wind in the first half, thus hoping to build a lead and utilize the wind to Milwaukee's advantage in the second half. At the end of the day, the plan worked, as Milwaukee pulled away with a 28-20 victory. As usual, the boys in black and white hoops started strong, scoring three unanswered converted tries in the first 20 minutes of...

MRFC @ Banshees

MRFC traveled to Eagan, MN to face the Banshees today. Final game of the regular season. Trying to keep their chance for a home playoff game alive, MRFC needed a win with a bonus point.Enough chit chat, on with the game. MRFC came out firing and scored the first try, Smyth up the middle with a Kos conversion gave them the lead 7-0. We seemed to have the momentum but couldn't keep the ball or take advantage of any situations. At 22 minutes the Banshees turned our loss into their gain with a try...

MRFC Falls in close one to Wisconsin

MRFC faced the toughest competition of the season yesterday when they went to Madison to play Wisconsin RC.Coach Beckman employed MRFC's biggest weapons, starting Erik Lindstrom at prop and Jaimie Hutchings at outside center (both players were starting for the first time this season).MRFC came out big and physical and was controlling possession. We were not able to score however due to Wisconsin playing a bend-but-don't-break defense, tackling well while on their own half of the pitch. An unlucky...

Fox Cities - Match Report

After barely escaping with a victory last week, and with a game against Wisconsin RFC coming up, MRFC had a lot of work and a lot to prove in this week's game against Fox Cities. It rained in the morning but by kick off the sun was out and their was just a slight breeze, beautiful day for a rugby match.MRFC jumped out to an early lead. After a few quick phases had lead to some long runs scrumhalf Jeremy Petfalski broke the defence and scored 4 minutes into the game. MRFC stayed on the attack, keeping...

MRFC wins close one opening weekend

Kick off to the season was a wet one. With the conditions it seemed that the game would be a slow, hard-hitting affair. The first half proved to be anything but. Initially the Banshees controlled the ball and used the possession to score first.Off a 5 meter try a center knifed through our defense to score center post. This strike by the Banshees woke the MRFC offense. In the next 15 minutes #5 lock Jake Gottfried and #3 prop Cole Coopman both scored after long MRFC possessions. The offensive onslaught...

We then got the #1 seed going into the playoffs. (#1 MRFC, #2 Youngbloodz, #3 Lions, #4 Dayton). We played Dayton in the semis and won 19-5. In the finals we played the lions. It was a great game. The defense was superb by both teams. The final score was 19-10. The Lions played tough, we gave them 2 tries, which was unfortunate. A few less...

MRFC Takes 2nd at Milwaukee Lakefront

Milwaukee entered pool play high with expectations a strong side and a 3 year win streak at lakefront intact. The club exuded strong play from all members as it posted the only 100+ score in the pool rounds while giving up only 25 pts. Milwaukee easily gained entry to the championship match with a 4 to 1 try victory over the Alumni of Dayton in the semi-finals. This set up a grudge match of sorts against their rival the Chicago Lions whom Milwaukee have met in the finals of the last several qualifier...

MRFC Squeak by Chicago Lions in Firehouse 7's Final

Milwaukee came into Firehouse 7s off a disheartening 2nd place finish at Youngbloodz 7s in Minnesota last week. Inspired by the return of Ryan Duklas along with his Palmer recruit Michael Junk Milwaukee delivered strong play from all its players resulting in a whopping 153 pts. for vs. 0 pts. against throughout pool play and the semi-finals of the tournament.Little was in doubt during the semi-final game against Northwestern University as superior discipline in defense by Milwaukee (which had...

Milwaukee RFC at Fond du Lac Wolfpac, May 10, 2010

Milwaukee RFC, fresh off an emotional victory the week before against the Milwaukee Westside Harlequins, entered this exhibition match without most of its A-side players. Injuries, travel and work schedules left Milwaukee with only 9 players from the club, so they were forced to call upon reinforcements from Green Bay RFC and from University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee RFC. All Milwaukee RFC players started the match, with Green Bay and UWM filling out the starting side.

The presence of Milwaukee A-side prop Cole Coopman, playing 8-man in this match, was indispensable. Coopman put down two tries early for Milwaukee, before being pulled in order to provide opportunities for the others who traveled to the match on this very cold spring day.

Second-row Jesse Schenk, captaining the Milwaukee side, put down his first try for Milwaukee RFC in the first half. These efforts, along with some great runs and a try from the visiting Green Bay outside center, gave Milwaukee RFC a commanding lead in the first half of the game. As the second half began and progressed, however, and more substitutions were made, the Milwaukee side began to lose its composure. Some very cheeky play by Fond du Lac’s centers allowed them to score several tries in loose play. After some more commendable work by the Fond du Lac team, and a converted penalty kick in the final minute of the match, Fond du Lac RFC squeezed out a one-point victory at a final score of 32-33.

Milwaukee RFC at Milwaukee Westside Harlequins, May 1, 2010

There is no way to understate the rivalry between the Milwaukee RFC and the Milwaukee Westside Harlequins. Both teams arrived at the Milwaukee County Sports Complex prepared for a physical, close rugby match. The weather was fair on this spring afternoon, although a stiff, unrelenting southwest wind would prove to be quite a factor in the end.The Harlequins, playing with the wind in the first half, were the first to score.A hard crash by their inside center created a second-phase overlap, which...
